Screen-Time Alternatives for Winter Park Families

· 4 min read

Students training at 1UP Martial Arts in Winter Park, Florida

Cutting screen time only works when something better replaces it. A few things that hold up better than a rule.

Every parent has tried the same experiment: take the tablet away and watch the afternoon fall apart. The problem usually isn't willpower. It's that nothing has taken the tablet's place.

Replace the slot, not just the device

Screens tend to own a specific window — right after school, or the stretch before dinner. Filling that exact window with something structured works far better than a general rule about less screen time.

Things that actually stick

  • A scheduled activity two or three afternoons a week, so it becomes routine rather than a negotiation.
  • Anything with visible progression, which is what makes games compelling in the first place.
  • Physical effort early enough in the day that it doesn't wreck bedtime.
  • Outdoor time at Cady Way Trail or Lake Baldwin when the Florida heat allows it.

Why martial arts fits the gap

Martial arts borrows the mechanics kids already love — levels, challenges, visible rank — and attaches them to real effort. Our whole approach at 1UP is built on that idea: unplug, train, transform.

Our summer camp exists for the same reason, giving families a screen-free full-day option when school is out.
