What to Expect at Your Child's First Class

· 3 min read

Students training at 1UP Martial Arts in Winter Park, Florida

What to wear, when to arrive, what happens if your child freezes at the door — a plain walkthrough of day one at 1UP.

Before you arrive

  • Wear comfortable athletic clothes — the free uniform is fitted on day one.
  • Bring a water bottle. Training barefoot on the mats is normal.
  • Arrive about 10 minutes early so we can meet your child before class starts.

The first fifteen minutes

A coach greets your child by name, shows them where to line up, and pairs them with a student who already knows the routine. No one gets dropped into the middle of a drill and left to figure it out.

If your child freezes

It happens constantly and it is not a problem. Some kids sit on the edge of the mat for their first class and watch. Almost all of them are in the line by class two. We never drag a child onto the floor.

Where parents sit

You are welcome to stay and watch the whole class. Many parents do for the first few weeks, then start using the time for a coffee run once their child settles in.

After class

A coach will find you for two minutes to talk about what they noticed and what your child will work on next. That conversation is where the plan actually gets built.
